Digital Ultrasound Services in Bowling Green, KY at Snodgrass Veterinary Medical Center
The veterinary team at Snodgrass Veterinary Medical Center offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services to maximize our quality of care and improve outcomes for our pet patients of all breeds, ages, and health backgrounds. Digital ultrasound is one of our frequently used techniques and is safe, effective, and affordable. We encourage you to ask us if this service is right for your pet.
How Digital Ultrasound Works
Ultrasound is a non-invasive way to look inside your pet's body without having to perform surgery. It works by sending painless, non-thermal sound waves into the body which then bounce off and/or are absorbed by different tissues. This sound/tissue interaction is then digitally transformed into a picture on a screen. These pictures are clear and "real-time," allowing our Bowling Green vet staff to visualize the movement, blood flow, internal structure, and function of the tissue or organ being studied.
This is in contrast to digital X-ray imaging, which we may use to get a clearer idea of the shape and position of tissues (rather than their function) and to assess bone fractures.
Like digital X-rays, digital ultrasound is painless for your pet. Plus, ultrasound exposes your pet to zero radiation (although the amount of radiation from our digital X-ray imaging is still exceedingly low).
Pet Health Conditions Diagnosed on Digital Ultrasound
Digital ultrasound is usually a preferred method of diagnosis for a variety of conditions, including cancers, tumors, foreign body ingestion, pregnancy, and other issues involving organs and internal soft tissue structures. We often examine the heart, spleen, liver, lungs, kidneys, stomach, uterus, and bladder using ultrasound.
What to Expect During Your Pet's Ultrasound Appointment
To maximize your animal's relaxation and improve the quality of the pictures taken, we sometimes recommend sedation or shave off the coat over the area being examined. During an ultrasound session, your pet will be helped into a comfortable position so that our vet staff can run the procedure, which generally takes less than 10-15 minutes.
After the appointment, we'll discuss with your our findings. Because the information collected is digital, our findings are easy to share with other relevant members of the pet health team. The type of information gleaned from such studies is pivotal for helping us confirm diagnoses and guide or modify treatments.
